Counting the ways that Portland is pretty cool
By liz • Mar 7th, 2009 • Category: Production BlogOk, actually two main reasons. The place looks awesome. There are cool waterfalls everywhere and amazing landscape. But cooler still is the crazy amassing of comic book talent in the area! What is going on up here?
But I’m getting ahead of myself. The first thing to tell you about is what we did in the San Francisco bay area after Wondercon. Well, I will admit to seeing a movie on a night off that I won’t even go into in detail… it’s just too embarrassing to admit that I saw something so awful at all let alone at the cinema. So on I move. We got to talk to the very lovely artists Briana Miller and Thien Pham, whose work you can see at the moment in San Francisco along Market St.
We also got to speak to the very cool James Sime of Isotope the Comic Book Lounge, which is a must visit for anyone in the area!
But then, after a very cool overnight train ride up through Oregon, we found ourselves in Portland. So far we’ve been to talk to some of the fantastic people up at Periscope Studio which was great fun and they were all very accommodating considering we were invading their workspace for the better part of a morning. We did take donuts though, so that should hopefully count for something…
We then spent the afternoon having a very enlightening interview with the very talented Kurt Busiek, who kindly let us come and bother him for a good hour or two. Thanks all for your generously given time!
As I said, Portland seems to be a bit of a hub for comics so there is surely going to be more to come.
